Atletico finished third behind Real Madrid and Barcelona last season, and were well off the pace for the first time in a few years. The club's transfer ban has restricted new arrivals, with Vitolo being farmed out to Las Palmas until the end of December, leaving Diego Simeone with much of the same squad as last term.
Girona are embarking on their first campaign in the Spanish first division after winning promotion from the Segunda league last season, finishing second. Manager Pablo Machin will be keen for his side to make a strong impression in their first outing.
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga opening-day clash between Girona and Atletico Madrid at the Estadi Municipal de Montilivi.
Machin hands debuts to new signings Bernardo Espinosa and Cristhian Stuani, who arrived from Middlesbrough. Marc Muniesa also starts following his arrival from Stoke, while Manchester City loanee Pablo Maffeo starts at right-back.
Atletico have a very familiar look, although Diego Godin is absent this evening. Jose Gimenez and Stefan Savic start in the heart of the defence flanked by Juanfran and Lucas Hernandez. The midfield is as expected, while Torres leads the line with Griezmann.
The players are making their way out on to the pitch, so we should be underway shortly.
There will be a minute's silence for the victims of the Barcelona terror attacks.
HALF-TIME: GIRONA 2-0 ATLETICO MADRID
Girona could not have asked for a better start to life in LaLiga. Cristhian Stuani put them ahead in the 22nd minute with a well-placed header before notching his second with another close-range effort. Diego Simeone will be fuming with his Atletico Madrid players and will be demanding a response in the second half.
The players are back out for the second half, so we should be underway shortly.
FULL-TIME: GIRONA 2-2 ATLETICO MADRID
Girona get off the mark in their first LaLiga match earning a point from the contest, although it could well have been all three. Cristhian Stuani put the home side into a 2-0 lead in the first half, while Atletico Madrid were reduced to 10 men when Antoine Griezmann was dismissed. The Frenchman's departure seemed to have ended hope for Diego Simeone's men, but goals from Angel Correa and Jose Gimenez earned them a valuable point on the road.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
