Real Madrid will face Liverpool in their third successive Champions League final at the end of May, but they have endured a disappointing domestic campaign by their standards. Zinedine Zidane’s side threw away the opportunity to inflict a first defeat of the season on bitter rivals Barcelona when they could only salvage a point despite Barca being down to 10 men at the weekend.
STAT: Real Madrid have not lost any of their last nine LaLiga games (W6 D3), their best unbeaten run of the season.
Good evening and welcome to our live coverage of today’s LaLiga game between Sevilla and Real Madrid at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
STAT: Sevilla have only won four of their last 16 league games against Real Madrid (L12), but all four wins have come at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.
Returning manager Joaquin Caparros guided Sevilla to their first win in nine games when they beat Real Sociedad on Friday, following the sacking of Vincenzo Montella. The White and Reds had not won in all competitions since their 2-1 Champions League last-16 victory over Manchester United, but have fallen from fifth to eighth, been eliminated from the Champions League and suffered a heavy Copa Del Ray final defeat to Barcelona since.
Madrid still have plenty to fight for though, as a victory today would see Los Blancos move ahead of city rivals Atletico Madrid on goal difference and swing the fight for second place in their favour. They will have to do it without top-scorer and star man Cristano Ronaldo, who was substitutes at half time due to injury and is not expected to be available again for the remainder of the league campaign.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
The victory over Sociedad could yet salvage Sevilla’s season though, as they sit only a point behind Getafe, who occupy the final Europa League qualification place. Three points today would put them in in charge of the race for Europe, whereas defeat could leave Caparos’ side facing the very real possibility of their lowest league finish since the 2013/14 season, when they finished ninth.
Sevilla XI (3-4-1-2): David Soria; Gabriel Mercado, Clement Lenglet, Nico Pareja; Miguel Layun, Guido Pizarro, Steven N’Zonzi, Sergio Escudero; Franco Vazquez; Wissam Ben Yedder, Luis Muriel.
Real Madrid XI (4-3-3): Kiko Casilla; Nacho, Jesus Vallejo, Sergio Ramos, Theo Hernandez; Mateo Kovacic, Casemiro, Dani Ceballos; Lucas Vazquez, Karim Benzema, Marco Asensio.
Real Madrid substitutes: Luca Zidane, Oscar Rodriguez, Achraf Hakimi, Marcos Llorente, Alvaro Tejero, Borja Mayoral, Luismi Quezada.
Sevilla make five changes to the side that beat Real Sociedad 1-0 on Friday, with only N’Zonzi retaining his place outside of the defence. Pareja, Pizarro, Vazquez, Ben Yedder and Muriel all come into the side in favour of Sandro, Nolito, Banega, Sarabia and Mesa.
Only Ramos, Benzema and Nacho retain their places from the side that drew 2-2 with Barcelona on Sunday. Casilla replaces Keylor Navas in goal, while Vallejo and Hernandez come into defence in favour of Varane and Marcelo. Modric and Kroos are replaced in midfield by Kovacic and Ceballos, while Vazquez and Asensio will join Benzema in attack.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: SEVILLA 2-0 REAL MADRID.
Sevilla lead at the break and it has been two simple long balls that have done the damage to Madrid. Ben Yedder had opened the scoring after latching onto Muriel's flick on, before Layun side footed in at the near post after Real were left completely exposed at the back. Los Blancos have enjoyed plenty of possession throughout but have been limited to half chances by Sevilla and have struggled to really trouble this home defence. Sevilla are 45 minutes away from putting their European qualification in their own hands.
The players are heading back out onto the pitch, ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: SEVILLA 3-2 REAL MADRID.
No time for a Madrid comeback as Sevilla hold on to secure an impressive victory and take control of the race for seventh and a place in the Europa League. Mercado's cross was looped into the back of the net by Ramos' sliding block to give Sevilla a three goal cushion late on, following first half goals by Ben Yedder and Layun. Madrid gave themselves a glimmer of hope as Mayoral headed home Asensio's cross but they could not find any way to break down a well organised and determined Sevilla defence. Ramos' made up for his earlier penalty miss by scoring at the second attempt after Theo Hernandez was brought down in the box in injury time, but it proved too late for a comeback as Sevilla ran out worthy winners. The result means Madrid remain third, three points adrift of Atletico, while Sevilla climb two points above Getafe with two games left to play.
