Atletico are in possession in their own half, looking to waste time and force Eibar to chase. Simeone should be happy with a draw in the final match of the season – especially considering his side have played with a man disadvantage for over half an hour.
90' +3
Xesc Regis enters the game and replaces Kike García.
Kike is taken off with three minutes left in the match, with 21-year old Xesc Regis taking his place.
90'
The referee indicates there will be an additional five minutes at the end of the match – with the bulk of that coming as a result of the stoppage for Dmitrovic’s injury.
88'
Eibar are passing the ball around at the back – looking to start an attack from their own half but a giveaway from Jose Angel gifts the ball to Atleti with two minutes left in regulation time.
86'
Orellana gets into the box and sends a cross for Escalante who waits in roughly the same place that Pena scored from 15 minutes earlier. The midfielder traps the pass well and curls a shot towards Oblak but the goalkeeper makes a confident save.
83'
S. Savić gets yellow.
The referee blows his whistle and shows a yellow card to Stefan Savic for putting his foot into the back of Charles. Eibar are furious that the referee didn’t play advantage, as the away side were bearing down on goal and had a numerical advantage prior to the referee’s interference.
81'
Fernando Torres has the ball in the back of the net for a third time today, but the linesman’s flag is raised as Griezmann took up an offside position in the build-up.
78'
Charles enters the game and replaces Iván Alejo.
Charles enters the pitch in place of Ivi, which signals Mendilibar’s instructions to play with two strikers in an attempt to take advantage of Atletico’s lack of an 11th player.
77'
Almost another goal from Kike! The Eibar striker bears down on goal before angling his body and looking to curl a shot into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area. It is a great effort which forces Oblak into a full stretch, but the shot goes just wide.
75'
Dmitrovic returns to his feet and looks capable of finishing the match, despite some heavy bandaging on his left leg.
Minute
Description
73'
Dmitrovic remains down on the grass after that heavy collision with Diego Costa. It looks doubtful that the goalkeeper will be able to continue, as it looks to be a problem with his left leg.
71'
Diego Costa gets yellow.
Diego Costa is shown a yellow card after it appears that he pushed Pena into his goalkeeper, before Costa made contact with Dmitrovic himself.
70'
Rubén Peña has scored a goal for Eibar!
WHAT A STUNNING STRIKE FROM RUBEN PENA WHO MAKES IT 2-2! What a fantastic hit from the right-back. A cross comes in for Escalante but it is immediately headed away, just outside the penalty area. Pena anticipates the ball and takes a touch to set himself before smashing a volley into the top corner! Oblak had no chance despite his best efforts.
66'
Anaitz Arbilla enters the game and replaces Lombán.
J. Giménez enters the game and replaces Vitolo.
Diego Simeone makes his third and final change of the match following Lucas Hernandez’s red card. It will be Jose Maria Gimenez who takes the place of Vitolo – which means that Fernando Torres will play the full 90 minutes in his final game.
David Lomban is removed for Anaitz Arbilla in Eibar’s first substitution of the match.
65'
Lombán gets yellow.
The free-kick is taken with a pass and Orellana immediately hits the by-line and crosses the ball in the centre for Kike, but Felipe Luis is first to it with his head and the full-back clears the danger.
Yellow card David Rodríguez Lombán
63'
L. Hernández gets a second yellow card and is sent off.
HERNANDEZ SEES RED! Lucas Hernandez exits the pitch to a standing ovation after being shown a second yellow card, and thus a red, following a harsh tackle on Ivi.
61'
Fernando Torres gets yellow.
Fernando Torres is shown a yellow card for excessive celebration after jumping into the stands to embrace the Atletico fans. A worthwhile booking - and certainly not one that Torres can be criticized for.
60'
Fernando Torres has scored a goal for Atletico Madrid! Assist by Diego Costa.
Diego Costa, immediately after entering the pitch, assists Fernando Torres' goal which puts Atleti up 2-1.
FERNANDO TORRES PUTS ATLETI UP 2-1 AND CELEBRATES WITH THE FANS! A brilliantly taken chance gives Atletico Madrid the lead at the Wanda Metropolitano. Felipe Luis sends a long-ball towards Diego Costa who, in typical fashion, chests it down and sends a through ball for Torres who splits the defenders and waits for the keeper to make his move before rounding him and slotting the ball into the back of the net.
59'
A. Griezmann enters the game and replaces Koke.
Diego Costa enters the game and replaces Á. Correa.
Diego Simeone makes his first substitution just before the hour mark, with Angel Correa making way for Diego Costa.
It’s a double-substitution for Atleti as Koke is also removed in favour of Antoine Griezmann.
58'
The free-kick is sent in towards Savic but the referee blows play dead as the Atleti centre-back is deemed to have fouled Pedro Oliveira. Certainly a wasted opportunity for Atletico Madrid who could have done better from the nicely-placed set-piece.
56'
Dani García gets yellow.
Dani Garcia brings down Vitolo who led the counter-attack and the Eibar midfielder is shown a yellow card for his tackle.
55'
Orellana puts in a cross for Kike but it is headed initially by Luis. The Brazilian full-back then inexplicably volleys a clearance towards Kike, who gets a second opportunity at goal which is dealt with well. Atleti then get possession and look to counter quickly.
52'
Orellana fluffs a shot from the penalty spot and the ball rolls through to the right-hand side for Ivi who puts a cross into the area looking for Escalante. The midfielder's jump is mistimed however and Oblak makes the save.
50'
Torres receives the ball in midfield and looks to break towards Dmitrovic’s goal but the referee halts play as the Atleti striker hit Dani Garcia in the face with a flailing hand. It was certainly unintentional, but an offence nonetheless.
47'
Koke gets onto the end of a loose ball at the edge of the Eibar penalty area and attempts a first-time shot but the effort lacks any power and Dmitrovic gets down well to make the save.
45'
Eibar get the second half underway!
42'
Fernando Torres has scored a goal for Atletico Madrid! Assist by Á. Correa.
FERNANDO TORRES HAS HIS GOAL! Shortly after Kike had a chance from a header which was saved by Oblak, Torres levels the scoring in his final match. Correa breaks into the Eibar half virtually unmarked and onside thanks to a perfect pass from midfield and passes to Torres immediately after getting into the penalty area. From there, El Nino tapped the ball into the open net gratefully. 1-1 at the Wanda Metropolitano!
Wonderfully unselfish play from Angel Correa who chose to pass the ball to Torres instead of taking on the strike himself. For his effort, he will be credited with an assist.
40'
Felipe Luis is taken down in his own half and the left-back looks to restart play quickly, as the home side are down with five minutes left in the first half.
37'
Atleti look to counter quickly as Felipe Luis sends a ball downfield for Torres, but he is unable to stay onside and the referee stops play for an Eibar free-kick.
35'
Kike García has scored a goal for Eibar! Assist by Joan Jordán.
EIBAR TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH GARCIA! A high ball is headed down and sent through the middle of the defence by Joan Jordan for Kike who takes his shot as he falls to the floor, wedged between two Atletico markers. It has come somewhat against the run of play, but Eibar now lead 1-0!
The pass for Kike was inch-perfect by Joan Jordan who is credited with the assist.
34'
Juanfran gets free on the right and finds an open Correa inside the penalty area. Closing in on goal, Correa chooses to pass the ball across for Torres instead of shooting on target. The ball is once again intercepted at the last moment by an Eibar defender however and the score remains 0-0.
32'
Angel Correa lays it off for Felipe Luis who enters the penalty area rapidly and the Brazilian left-back immediately looks to centre the ball for Torres who anticipates the cross-goal pass. The defending is superb though and the ball is intercepted by Jose Angel.
29'
Gonzalo Escalante goes to ground after duelling with Torres and Eibar win a free-kick midway between the penalty area and the centre circle. Kike rises highest to meet the floated cross, but he sends his header wide.
27'
Correa’s corner is a lot poorer than Koke’s previous effort, with the striker unable to beat the first man on the delivery. Eibar use the chance to retain possession and build a calculated attack.
25'
Koke puts a corner into the six-yard box but Dmitrovic punches the ball away from danger – but out for another corner on the other side.
24'
It is Saul who sends to set-piece towards Dmitrovic’s goal, but the strike is weak and off-target. Certainly a wasted chance for Atletico who must do better taking their opportunities.
23'
Atleti have a free-kick outside the Eibar penalty area and it’s Saul who is standing over it.
22'
Filipe Luís gets yellow.
In the build-up to that Eibar chance, Felipe Luis jumped into a tackle on Ivi, and he will receive a yellow card as punishment.
21'
A well-worked one-two pass creates some space for Kike but the shot is horribly off-target.
19'
Ivi puts in a cross from the right and it falls to Orellana on the other side, but his volleyed effort presents no challenge to Oblak’s goal.
17'
Eibar are closing Atletico down very well, not allowing them to get out of their half. Ivi commits a rash challenge on Vitolo which will allow Atletico Madrid a chance to breathe.
14'
Atletico are enjoying a spell of possession just outside the Eibar penalty area. Juanfran sends a cross into the centre but Dmitrovic positions himself well to make the easy catch.
12'
Saul gets through the heart of Eibar’s midfield and attempts a through pass to Fernando Torres but the pass is blocked and it comes back to Saul who attempts a long-range effort but his shot goes over the crossbar.
11'
TORRES DRAGS HIS SHOT WIDE! Correa chips the ball over the defence for Torres who dribbles into the area and sends a shot to the right of Dmitrovic, but it misses the far post and trickles harmlessly wide.
9'
Jordan sends the Eibar free-kick into the area but it’s repelled by Felipe Luis. The header falls to Orellana who dribbles towards goal but Atleti’s compact defence forces Orellana to dribble the ball out for a goal-kick.
8'
L. Hernández gets yellow.
An early yellow card is shown to Lucas Hernandez for elbowing Kike in the head during an aerial duel.
7'
Eibar spread play to the right but Orellana is unable to catch up to the slightly wayward switch and Atletico are gifted a throw-in in their own half.
4'
Vitolo gets inside the penalty area and puts the ball onto his right foot, but before he can muster a shot, the referee calls play back as the Atleti winger strayed just offside.
3'
Eibar have started at breakneck speed, pressing high up the pitch anytime Atletico are in possession. Their own ball movement has been slightly lacking, however, as they have already committed a couple of turnovers in midfield.
1'
The referee blows his whistle and Atleti get the match underway!
Good evening and welcome to our live commentary of the LaLiga fixture between Atletico Madrid and Eibar from the Estadio Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid!
It will be a day of celebration today for the home fans as Atletico take to the pitch for the first time since their 3-0 thrashing of Marseille in the Europa League final on Wednesday – Atleti’s first trophy in four years. Yesterday’s thrilling 2-2 draw between Real Madrid and Villareal also means that Simeone’s side enter the final match week guaranteed of second position, two points ahead of Los Blancos who have now completed their entire fixture list.
Unlike their counterparts, Eibar’s final position in the table is slightly more ambiguous. Jose Luis Mendilibar has his side in 10th position – but they could rise to ninth, or fall to 11th place depending on the result in this match, as well as the fixture between Barcelona and Real Sociedad.
Eibar enter today’s fixture undefeated in three matches, with two wins on the bounce and only one goal conceded in that time. Defensively, they have been solid all season, conceding less than four teams above them in the table. It has been at the other end of the pitch where problems have been prominent, as a 34-year old Charles tops their goal-scoring list with eight – almost 20% of Eibar’s domestic goals this season.
With 15 minutes to go before kick-off, it’s about time we take a look at how the two sides will line up in their final game of the season.
The history between these two sides points to only one winner – as Atletico Madrid have emerged victorious in 10 of the 13 meetings between the two teams, with their only loss coming away from home at the Estadio Municipal de Ipurua in Eibar.
Atletico Madrid Starting XI (4-4-2): Jan Oblak; Felipe Luis, Lucas Hernandez, Stefan Savic, Juanfran; Vitolo, Gabi, Saul, Koke; Angel Correa, Fernando Torres.
Atletico Madrid substitutes: Axel Werner, Diego Godin, Jose Maria Gimenez, Thomas Partey, Antoine Griezmann, Diego Costa, Kevin Gameiro.
The party atmosphere will be somewhat subdued by the imminent departures of two giant figures in Atletico history. With speculation rife, it seems that Antoine Griezmann is destined to play for Barcelona next campaign – while Diego Simeone has already confirmed the exit of Atleti talisman Fernando Torres; but not before the former Liverpool striker got a chance to hold aloft his first ever trophy in Rojiblanco – the aforementioned Europa League.
Eibar substitutes: Yoel, Ander Capa, Sergi Enrich, Anaitz Arbilla, Charles, Xesc Regis, Ivan Ramis.
Diego Simeone changes from the 4-3-1-2 that beat Getafe in league action eight days ago to his traditional 4-4-2, making four personnel alterations in the process. Lucas Hernandez replaces Diego Godin at centre-back, while Koke gets a start in midfield ahead of Thomas Partey. The final two switches are in attack, with Angel Correa replacing Antoine Griezmann, and Diego Costa making way for Fernando Torres, who will start with the captain’s armband in his final match for the club.
Jose Luis Mendilibar makes three changes from the side that emerged victorious over Las Palmas eight days ago. Gonzalo Escalante replaces Pape Kouli Diop in midfield as the latter recently picked up a knee injury. Takashi Inui is replaced by Ivi on the left wing, and he will look to support striker Kike, who replaces Charles.
Eibar enter half time with a 1-1 draw despite taking the lead through Kike – an advantage which lasted 7 minutes. Eibar out of possession have done well pressing and harrying the Atleti players in their own half. The wings have provided fertile hunting ground for Atletico attacks, however, with Juanfran and Felipe Luis causing the defence a number of problems.
HALF TIME: Atletico Madrid 1-1 Eibar.
The result still hangs in the balance – with each side able to bring on game changers in order to solidify the result. Mendilibar has top-scorer Charles on the bench while, on the other side, it is expected that Simeone will substitute Torres to a standing ovation, with one of Diego Costa, Antoine Griezmann or Kevin Gameiro replacing him.
Fernando Torres’ goal to equalise in the 42nd minute was certainly to be expected, especially after having seen how the Atletico midfielders attempted to run every attack through the talismanic striker. Felipe Luis and Angel Correa have been incredibly unselfish in this contest, looking for the run of El Nino instead of taking shots at goal themselves. Though Atleti could be leading, it is wonderful to see the reverence shown to the former Liverpool striker by his teammates.
Eibar Starting XI (4-2-3-1): Marko Dmitrovic; Ruben Pena, David Lomban, Paulo Oliveira, Jose Angel; Gonzalo Escalante, Dani Garcia; Fabio Orellana, Joan Jordan, Ivi; Kike.
Both sides deserved a point for their efforts, though Atleti did not defend today as well and as compact as they usually do. Perhaps that can be put down to the fantastic play of Eibar however, as their 35th-minute opener forced Simeone’s side to chase the game and open themselves up at the back.
FULL-TIME: Atletico Madrid 2-2 Eibar.
It may not have been the result Atletico Madrid and Fernando Torres wanted, but two goals in his farewell and a second-place finish should be enough to make everyone at the Wanda Metropolitano smile. It was a hotly contested match despite a slight lack of meaning – with neither side backing down from a challenge.
That ends our coverage of the LaLiga fixture between Atletico Madrid and Eibar. We hope you enjoyed the match, and we look forward to seeing you all again soon! Thank you!
