France were able to edge their way through the group stage without playing their best football. They defeated Australia and Peru by narrow margins before drawing their last contest against Denmark. Didier Deschamps and his team would have been hopeful that Argentina would not have made it through and now have the test of facing Lionel Messi, despite the Albiceleste's issues at the World Cup.
Argentina had to defeat Nigeria in their last group game to make it through to the last 16. Despite Messi's opener in the 14th minute, Victor Moses' strike from the spot looked to have sent Jorge Sampaoli's men out of the tournament.
