Hello and welcome to the Champions League last 16 clash between Roma and Porto.
Roma have not been at their best of late, though they have only lost one of their last eight. Defeats to Real Madrid and Viktoria Plzen in their two group matches saw the Serie A side finish second in Group G. A good win against Chievo at the weekend kept Roma just a point outside the top four in Serie A. They will be confident of recording a positive result in Italy’s capital this evening.
Porto come into this riding a long unbeaten run, having not lost a match since October. Five straight wins to end the group stage saw the Portuguese side cruise to the top of Group D. Goal scoring has been a concern of late, however, resulting in three draws in their last five league matches, which has seen Benfica close the gap at the top of the table.
ROMA (4-3-3): Antonio Mirante; Alessandro Florenzi, Kostas Manolas, Federico Fazio, Aleksandar Kolarov; Lorenzo Pellegrini, Daniele De Rossi, Bryan Cristante; Nicolo Zaniolo, Edin Dzeko, Stephan El Shaarawy.
SUBS: Steven Nzonzi, Davide Santon, Ivan Marcano, Javier Pastore, Robin Olsen, Juan Jesus, Justin Kluivert.
SUBS: Hernani, Maxi Pereira, Adrian Lopez, Andre Pereira, Oliver Torres, Bruno Costa, Vana Alves.
PORTO (4-1-4-1): Iker Casillas; Eder Militao, Felipe, Pepe, Alex Telles; Danilo Pereira; Fernando, Hector Herrera, Otavio, Yacine Brahimi; Tiquinho Soares.
Porto’s starting XI have amassed 440 Champions League appearances (including tonight), 116 more than Roma’s starting team (324 CL apps).
Roma were unimpressive in the first half and it might not be long before Di Francesco looks to make changes. The midfield was ineffective as Pellegrini and Cristante did not offer enough going forward. Pastore could come on early in the second half for some extra creativity. Porto will be happy to be level, though they have not posed much of a threat. Conceicao would be happy with a draw but will be keen to get an away goal in the second half.
This tie is beautifully poised after a dramatic second half. Roma will be buoyed by their second half performance and a great result. Di Francesco’s side face three crucial Serie A fixtures before they head to Portugal for the second leg. Porto will be pleased they got an away goal, but this defeat continues a disappointing few weeks. The reigning Primeira Liga champions have some key matches in their title defence, including a clash with Benfica, before they host the return leg.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
