Referee Clement Turpin blows his whistle, and City get us underway at the Etihad!
Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of this Champions League round-of-16 second-leg clash as Manchester City host Schalke at the Etihad Stadium!
Manchester City showed true resolve and determination to come back from 2-1 down win 3-2 in the first-leg, even when Nicolas Otamendi was sent off with almost 20 minutes to go. Currently in the midst of a nine-match winning run in all competitions which has seen them leapfrog Liverpool at the top of the Premier League and also includes their successful defence of the EFL Cup, Pep Guardiola and his quadruple-chasing Citizens will aim to finish the job in front of an expectant fanbase seeking a first-ever Champions League triumph.
Schalke, in the starkest of contrasts, have had a dire time of it recently. Currently sitting just four points away from the Bundesliga drop zone, Domenico Tedesco’s men have been on a three-match losing streak since that dramatic first-leg at the Veltins-Arena three weeks ago. Despite having won only one competitive away match since November, the German outfit have fared a lot better on their continental road trips having been unbeaten in 12 of their last 15 European away visits. However, a daunting task lies ahead of them at the Etihad.
SUBSTITUTES: Gabriel Jesus, Cameron Humphreys-Grant, Arijanet Muric, Fabian Delph, Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden, John Stones.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Danilo, Aymeric Laporte, Oleksandr Zinchenko; Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, David Silva (c); Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, Leroy Sane.
SUBSTITUTES: Steven Skrzybski, Alexander Nubel, Sebastian Rudy, Hamza Mendyl, Cedric Teuchert, Rabbi Matondo, Ahmed Kutucu.
Schalke now have nothing to play for but pride, and may come out of the interval with nothing to lose as the under-fire Tedesco is on course to suffer his fourth defeat on the bounce in all competitions. Damage limitation should now be on the forefront of the visitors’ minds, while City are in a comfortable enough position to potentially rest a few key players and bring on the likes of Foden and Humphreys-Grant who could make his senior bow later.
And that wraps up our coverage. We hope you enjoyed our commentary, and until next time, goodbye!
Next up for Schalke is a must-win match at home to Leipzig on Saturday which could go a long way into their aim for Bundesliga survival in a terrible domestic campaign for the Gelsenkirchen outfit. As for City, their charge towards a historic quadruple continues with an FA Cup quarter-final trip to Swansea City on the same day.
