Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Champions League quarter-final first leg clash between Tottenham and Manchester City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Tottenham's bid to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League goes through a familiar foe in the form of City. The two English clubs have been drawn against each other for the first time in European football. Spurs have already been beaten once by Pep Guardiola's men this season, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Wembley. Now in their new ground, Mauricio Pochettino and his team will be looking to land a decisive blow to take a lead back to the Etihad Stadium.
TOTTENHAM (4-3-3): Hugo Lloris; Kieran Trippier, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen, Danny Rose; Christian Eriksen, Harry Winks, Moussa Sissoko; Son Heung-min, Dele Alli, Harry Kane.
SUBS: Davinson Sanchez, Victor Wanyama, Fernando Llorente, Juan Foyth, Paulo Gazzaniga, Lucas Moura, Ben Davies.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, Nicolas Otamendi, Aymeric Laporte, Fabian Delph; Ilkay Gundogan, Fernandinho, David Silva; Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling.
SUBS: Vincent Kompany, John Stones, Kevin De Bruyne, Leroy Sane, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden, Arijanet Muric.
City have underperformed in the Champions League in Guardiola's previous two terms at the club, falling at the quarter-final stage last year and the round of 16 in the season before. There is a pressure on the Spaniard and his team despite their past success in the Premier League along with the EFL Cup. The Champions League is the one competition that City have not managed to lift since Sheikh Mansour assumed control of the club in 2008. They will be determined to take command of the contest this evening to ease their way through to the semi-finals.
City have been far from their best and the amount of matches that the club have played recently could just be catching up with them. They have been flat in their demeanour on the pitch and are in need of a spark to jolt them into life. Tottenham need to capitalise in the second half to take an advantage to the Etihad Stadium for the second leg.
Spurs are next in action against Huddersfield Town in the Premier League at home on Saturday. City play Crystal Palace on the road on Sunday in their next outing.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
